February 1st screening with filmmaker Oksana Karpovych in attendance

Ukrainian intelligence services have intercepted thousands of phone calls Russian soldiers made from the battlefield in Ukraine to their families and friends in Russia, painting a stark picture of the cruelty of war in a dizzying emotional tension. Juxtaposed with images of the destruction caused by the invasion and the day-to-day life of the Ukrainian people who resist and rebuild, the voices of the Russian soldiers – ranging from being filled with heroic illusions to complete disappointment and loss of reason, from looting to committing more horrible war crimes, from propaganda to doubt and disillusionment – expose the whole scope of the dehumanizing power of war and imperialist nature of the Russian aggression.

New 4K Restoration

Widely considered the most important film in the history of Ukranian cinema, Sergei Parajanov's Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors is a masterwork that boldly combines folkloric pageantry, fairy tale mysticism, and frenetic, hallucinatory cinematography. Adapted from Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's novel, Shadows tells the story of Ivan (Ivan Mykolaichuk), a young Hutsul peasant who witnesses his father's murder by the local miser. Years later, Ivan falls in love with the miser's daughter, Marichka (Larisa Kadochnikova), but her shocking death leaves him wallowing in grief until he meets Palahna (Tatyana Bestayeva), a beautiful woman who seems to restore his faith in life and hope for the future. When the ghost of Marichka begins to haunt Ivan, however, Palahna is driven into the arms of the local sorcerer (Spartak Bagashvili), with tragic results. Shadows is steeped in the earthy atmosphere of the Carpathian mountains; filmed by Parajanov and cinematographer Yuri Ilyenko with an eye for constantly innovative camera movements and vivid color; and suffused by Hutsul culture in the form of composer Myroslav Skoryk's collage-like score, which brings together Ukrainian folk melodies with modernist, experimental orchestration. It is one of cinema's singular productions, capturing the spiritual majesty of the past by creatively forging the medium's future.

2K Restaurations

Delve deeper into the labyrinthine psyche of surrealist nightmare-weaver David Lynch with these unsettling, hallucinatory shorts that reflect the origins and evolution of his singular style. Spanning the early experimental and painterly works that laid the foundation for his cult sensation ERASERHEAD through his darkly absurdist web animation series DUMBLAND, these films are replete with the sinister, uncanny imagery that could have emerged only from an artist so deeply in tune with his subconscious.

Screening with Marianne Marquis-Gravel and filmmakers Pier-Luc Latulippe and Martin Fournier in attendance, preceded by a musical performance from Demain Déluge.

This moving documentary follows Simon and Marianne during their final weeks together. Suffering from incurable brain cancer, writer and college literature teacher Simon Roy has requested medical assistance in dying. Filmmakers Pier-Luc Latulippe and Martin Fournier compose spellbinding vignettes of this couple's daily life in cozy black and white, wrapped in a delicate sound design. From their discussions emerge, with disarming lucidity, their relationship to death, but above all to life and love. Filled with tenderness and at the protagonists' pace, these intimate moments are captured using meticulous still shots with respect devoid of voyeurism. Although confrontational, this luminous film emerges as a celebration of the present moment. (RIDM)

As he says, "I think every time you do something, like a painting or whatever, you go with ideas, and sometimes the past can conjure those ideas and color them. Even if they're new ideas, the past colors them." We're invited in and given private views from Lynch's compound and painting studio in the hills high above Hollywood, as he tells personal stories that unfold like scenes from his films. Strange characters come into focus only to fade again into the past, all leaving an indelible mark.

This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico), who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family's eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). Vermiglio portrays the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family's past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema. Yet, through Lucia's perspective, Vermiglio feels distinct and novel.

The film revolves around two men, Brandon and Phillip, who commit a murder as an intellectual experiment, concealing the crime in plain sight. Their relationship has an undeniable queer subtext, it's charged with tension, and a sense of intimacy that blurs the lines between friendship and something more complex and kinky.

New 2K Restoration

Made in 1998, not long after the success of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, LOVE & POP was director Hideaki Anno's first live-action feature film. Despite already being established as a filmmaker, Anno embraced new technologies and unconventional stylistic choices to tell the story of Hiromi (Asumi Miwa) and her schoolgirl friends as they engage in enjo kosai, or "compensated dating," where older men pay young girls for dates. Using new digital cameras, Anno seemed limited by only his imagination as he shot the film; rigging the camera to unconventional devices, adopting a rapid-fire editing style and using a full-range of distorting effects. The resulting experience is a transgressive examination of transactional desire with a style that embodies the full creative range of the underground spirit. (Fantasia)

United Nations, 1960: the Global South ignites a political earthquake, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe, and the U.S. State Department swings into action, sending jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. Director Johan Grimonprez captures the moment when African politics and American jazz collided in this magnificent essay film, a riveting historical rollercoaster that illuminates the political machinations behind the 1961 assassination of Congo's leader Patrice Lumumba. Richly illustrated by eyewitness accounts, official government memos, testimonies from mercenaries and CIA operatives, speeches from Lumumba himself, and a veritable canon of jazz icons, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat interrogates colonial history to tell an urgent and timely story of precedent that resonates more than ever in today's geopolitical climate.
