Original French version, English subtitles

Screening with Marianne Marquis-Gravel and filmmakers Pier-Luc Latulippe and Martin Fournier in attendance, preceded by a musical performance from Demain Déluge.

This moving documentary follows Simon and Marianne during their final weeks together. Suffering from incurable brain cancer, writer and college literature teacher Simon Roy has requested medical assistance in dying. Filmmakers Pier-Luc Latulippe and Martin Fournier compose spellbinding vignettes of this couple's daily life in cozy black and white, wrapped in a delicate sound design. From their discussions emerge, with disarming lucidity, their relationship to death, but above all to life and love. Filled with tenderness and at the protagonists' pace, these intimate moments are captured using meticulous still shots with respect devoid of voyeurism. Although confrontational, this luminous film emerges as a celebration of the present moment. (RIDM)

Jan, a nurse, has rebuilt his life in Greenland with his wife and two children. He has fled an incestuous past, which resurfaces when his dying father starts writing to him. Engulfed in a spiral of torment, Jan becomes a true Kalak, a "dirty Greenlander". A fragmented tale of a damaged man reproducing cycles of violence and domination, both sexual and colonial, Kalak brilliantly tackles the thorny issues of trauma and catharsis. Featuring unpredictable key scenes, this second feature plunges us into the heart of a wildly complex character, both victim and executioner, played by the incredible Emil Johnsen.

New 4K Restoration

Harmony Korine's debut feature is an audacious, lyrical evocation of America's rural underbelly, and an elegy in the southern-gothic tradition of William Faulkner and William Eggleston. Shot in Korine's native Nashville-standing in for the tornado-ravaged Xenia, Ohio-the rough-hewn film follows two young friends, Tummler and Solomon, as they ride around town, huffing glue and hunting stray cats, their every local encounter charged with vaudevillian anarchy as well as deep pathos. At once transgressive and empathetic, disturbing and undeniably beautiful, Gummo is a one-of-a-kind portrait of angelic and devilish souls caught in a cultural void, circumscribed by poverty and the depleted, alienated spiritual life of late-twentieth-century America.

MEMOIR OF A SNAIL (Adam Elliot, Australia, 2024, English with French subtitles, 94 minutes)
Fifteen years after the unforgettable Mary & Max, Australian filmmaker and animator Adam Elliot returns with the equally poignant story of Grace Pudel, a lonely woman caring for her eccentric friend Pinky, who has reached the twilight of her life. As Grace reflects on her chaotic childhood, her estranged brother and her alcoholic, paraplegic father, she particularly remembers what sparked her obsession with snails. Retaining his magical and expressive artistry that perfectly blends absurdity and bittersweet melancholy, Elliot presents a wondrous and surprising ode to beauty in his second stop-motion feature. New 4K Restoration

Has dialogue ever been more perfectly hard-boiled? Has a femme fatale ever been as deliciously wicked as Barbara Stanwyck? And has 1940s Los Angeles ever looked so seductively sordid? Working with cowriter Raymond Chandler, director Billy Wilder launched himself onto the Hollywood A-list with this epitome of film-noir fatalism from James M. Cain's pulp novel. When slick salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) walks into the swank home of dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck), he intends to sell insurance, but he winds up becoming entangled with her in a far more sinister way. Featuring scene-stealing supporting work from Edward G. Robinson and the chiaroscuro of cinematographer John F. Seitz, Double Indemnity is one of the most entertainingly perverse stories ever told and the standard by which all noir must be measured.

The winner of this year's OEil d'Or (Golden Eye) award at Cannes, this intriguing film portrays the hopeful spirit of the youth movement calling for urgent social change in India. Director Payal Kapadia weaves a narrative from the correspondence between two university students, L and K, whose romance is thwarted by the archaic caste system. Featuring images from her time at film school, the documentary immerses us in student life and the huge personal and political shifts that it engenders. When desire crumbles into disillusionment, and when the joyful energy of the protests is crushed by repressive force, L's revolutionary spirit stands in stark contrast to K's conformism. A tale of love and rebellion that deftly conveys the passion, vitality, and boldness of youth. - RIDM
