The film that rocked the foundations of the 1980s underground, this postpunk provocation is a DIY fantasia of female rebellion set in America ten years after a social-democratic cultural revolution. When Adelaide Norris (Jean Satterfield), the black revolutionary founder of the Woman's Army, is mysteriously killed, a diverse coalition of women-across all lines of race, class, and sexual orientation-emerges to blow the system apart. Filmed guerrilla style on the streets of pre-gentrification New York, BORN IN FLAMES is a Molotov cocktail of feminist futurism that's both an essential document of its time and radically ahead of it.

A contemporary Quebec short film + an exclusively restored international feature film + a discussion with an emerging filmmaker: this is the formula of L'image fantôme, a regular series conceived by critics and programmers Elijah Baron, Louis-Jean Decazes, and Matheo Pino.

Between contemplation and strangeness, this double feature brings together two documentaries that immerse viewers in the daily lives of protagonists living in isolation deep in the mountains. In these timeless spaces, a mystical communion unfolds between the inhabitants and their environment.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Ralitsa Doncheva.

BABA DANA TALKS TO THE WOLVES (Raltisa Doncheva, Quebec/Bulgaria, 11 minutes)
An impressionistic portrait of Baba Dana, an 85 year-old Bulgarian woman who has chosen to spend her life in the mountain, away from people and cities.

TRÁS-OS-MONTES: NEW 4K RESTORATION (Margarida Cordeiro et António Reis, Portugal, 108 minutes)
A singular survey of a rural community in Trás-os-Montes, a mountainous region in northeastern Portugal, exploring rituals and landscapes while blending reality, fiction, ethnography, and poetry.

Drag racing east from Los Angeles in a souped-up '55 Chevy are the wayward Driver and Mechanic (singer-songwriter James Taylor and the Beach Boys' Dennis Wilson, in their only acting roles), accompanied by a tagalong Girl (Laurie Bird). Along the way, they meet Warren Oates's Pontiac GTO–driving wanderer and challenge him to a cross-country race. The prize: their cars' pink slips. But no summary can do justice to the existential punch of Two-Lane Blacktop. With its gorgeous widescreen compositions and sophisticated look at American male obsession, this stripped-down narrative from maverick director Monte Hellman is one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema, and possibly the greatest road movie ever made.

With his second feature, a towering epic that took him years to complete, Andrei Tarkovsky waded deep into the past and emerged with a visionary masterwork. Threading together several self-contained episodes, the filmmaker traces the renowned icon painter Andrei Rublev through the harsh realities of fifteenth-century Russian life, vividly conjuring the dark and otherworldly atmosphere of the age: a primitive hot-air balloon takes to the sky, snow falls inside an unfinished church, naked pagans celebrate the midsummer solstice, a young man oversees the casting of a gigantic bell. Appearing here in Tarkovsky's preferred 183-minute cut, as well as the version that was originally censored by Soviet authorities, ANDREI RUBLEV is an arresting meditation on art, faith, and endurance, and a powerful reflection on expressive constraints in the director's own time.

In the heart of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany stands a majestic ginkgo tree. This silent witness has observed over a century the quiet rhythms of transformation across three human lives.

2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong, exploring the mind of babies, begins an unexpected experiment with the old tree.1972, a young student is profoundly changed by the simple act of observing and connecting with a geranium. 1908, the university's first female student discovers, through the lens of photography, sacred patterns of the universe hidden within the humblest of plants.

We follow their clumsy, awkward attempts to connect - each one of them deeply rooted in their own present - as they are transformed by the quiet, enduring, and mysterious power of nature. The ancient ginkgo tree brings us closer to what it means to be human - to our longing to belong.

As the Empire of the Sun crumbles upon itself and a rain of firebombs falls upon Japan, the final death march of a nation is echoed in millions of smaller tragedies. This is the story of Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, two children born at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and now cast adrift in a world that lacks not the care to shelter them, but simply the resources. Forced to fend for themselves in the aftermath of fires that swept entire cities from the face of the earth, their doomed struggle is both a tribute to the human spirit and the stuff of nightmares. Beautiful, yet at times brutal and horrifying. Based on the retellings of survivor Nosaka Akiyuki and directed by Isao Takahata (co-founder, with Hayao Miyazaki, of Japan's legendary Studio Ghibli,) Grave Of The Fireflies has been universally hailed as an artistic and emotional tour de force. Now digitally remastered and restored, it is one of the rare films that truly deserves to be called a masterpiece.

Winner of the 1991 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Barbara Kopple's AMERICAN DREAM unflinchingly details the explosive 1985–86 labor strike against Hormel Foods in Austin, Minnesota, a city ripped apart in the tumult. Fed up with dangerous plant conditions and drastic wage cuts, Austin's Local P-9 went against the advice of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and, with the help of labor activist Ray Rogers's campaign to damage the meatpacking giant's public reputation, conducted a nearly yearlong walkout. But as the strike dragged on, some workers found themselves desperate to make ends meet and ready to cross the picket line, dividing a community already betrayed by a once progressive company and roiled by blockades, riots, and the intervention of the National Guard. Following up her landmark documentary HARLAN COUNTY USA with another engrossing report from the trenches of working-class America, Kopple poignantly captures the human and political costs of one of the most significant setbacks to organized labor amid the unchecked corporatism of the Reaganomics era.

Shot outside of Pittsburgh at a fraction of the cost of a Hollywood feature by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of flesh-eating ghouls newly arisen from their graves, Romero's claustrophobic vision of a late-sixties America (literally) tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in the lead role.

PETITS MODERNES PROGRAMMING - FREE ADMITTANCE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 12

When Satsuki and her sister Mei move with their father to a new home in the countryside, they find country life is not as simple as it seems. They soon discover that the house and nearby woods are full of strange and delightful creatures, including a gigantic but gentle forest spirit called Totoro, who can only be seen by children. Totoro and his friends introduce the girls to a series of adventures, including a ride aboard the extraordinary Cat Bus, in this all-ages animated masterpiece featuring the voices of Tim Daly, Lea Salonga, and real-life sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning, in early roles.
