March 14 screening with filmmaker Alexa-Jeanne Dubé in attendance

All SWEET SIXTEEN screenings to be paired with Québec short film GABY'S HILLS by Zoé Pelchat

GABY'S HILLS (Zoé Pelchat, 2023, 21 minutes)
Thirteen-year-old Gaby arrives in the Magdalen Islands to spend the summer with her father, as she does every year. She is thrilled to find the sea she loves so much, the childhood friends, the winding hills on the horizon, and the warm joy of her dad's home. But this time something is different: she hit puberty, and her life will never be the same.

SWEET SIXTEEN (Alexa-Jeanne Dubé, 2023, 64 minutes)
Sweet Sixteen presents eight 16 year old girls that unveil themselves through 8 bittersweet monologues. All highlighted in a evocative and poetic setting, the characters deliver on different themes; self-image, eating disorders, anxiety, their first love, their first kiss, friendship, sorority, sex, rape, incest, social media, social and political revolts. Constructed as a symphony form, the piece of work goes through four movements and is musically supported. The strong visual identity forces the movie to define itself somewhere between full feature film and object of art. Sweet Sixteen is a cinematographic adaptation done by Alexa-Jeanne Dubé from the play of the same name written in 2018 by the late Suzie Bastien.

Hank (Frederic Forrest) and Frannie (Teri Garr) argue while celebrating their fifth anniversary. Yearning for a life of excitement and romance, Frannie fears that she is wasting her life on a man who shows no interest in her dreams of traveling to far-off places. The argument escalates and they break up. Heading in separate ways and taking to the streets, they both meet and spend the night with strangers. Hank with the seductive Leila (Nastassja Kinski), a runaway circus performer, and Frannie with Ray (Raul Julia), a handsome waiter who moonlights as a cocktail pianist and singer.

The restoration, supervised by Francis Ford Coppola, was made in 4K by American Zoetrope and Roundabout Entertainment in the US. The 4K scans were lifted from the original camera negative, and great efforts have been made to add thirteen minutes of original camera negative, restoring opticals and dupe negative. The restoration was approved by Francis Ford Coppola himself, as six minutes of IP were added to replace the original negative that was thought to be destroyed in a flood in Rome where the negative was kept.

New 2K Restoration

Once only ordinary drama came between Lap (Joey Wong) and Rick (Kenny Bee). The lovers worked together at Lap's father's bar, where business was slow but enough. Then her father Cheung and Rick are coerced into one last job with the Triad that goes terribly wrong. Her father now a target wanted dead, Lap seeks the tutelage of a slippery rival boss named Godfather Shen, whose desires she must answer in return. Rick, meanwhile, hides away in the Philippines. Six years later he's assigned a hit job back in Hong Kong, where he finds his old flame, Lap, nestled reluctantly in the arms of Shen and fawned after by a younger friend (a very early turn by Tony Leung). The reunited love triangle erupts a bloody gang war.

Directed by Patrick Tam, Wong Kar-Wai's mentor and a key figure of the Hong Kong new wave, shot by venerated co-cinematographers Christopher Doyle and David Chung, and with music by Danny Chung (Happy Together), this pulpy 80s classic looks and sounds as lush as ever in this lavish 2K restoration.

He downright needs it to be, as he faces declining viewership. And tonight, Delroy's going to deliver. On levels his worst nightmares can't imagine. Among this evening's guests will be parapsychologist and author Dr. June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon, UNDERTOW), currently on the circuit promoting her new book, Conversations with the Devil. With her will be young teen Lilly (Ingrid Torelli), the sole survivor of a Satanic church's mass suicide, and the subject of said book, its title stemming from the fact that she claims to be demonically marked — and intermittently possessed. The studio audience fills the room as a multi-camera setup prepares to bring the event into living rooms across the country… - Fantasia

Special screening in partnership with DOC Québec

Tyr and Jasa grew up in an artistic household where art was a way of life. Quirky and insightful sisters, Tyr is a musician and singer while Jasa is an interdisciplinary artist. Inspired by their great-grandmother's recordings of Icelandic folk songs, they have developed artistic practices that draw on their colourful imaginations and Icelandic roots. Their exploration leads them to journey to Iceland for the first time and collaborate on a project that brings together their artistic disciplines and cultural heritage. In her debut feature film Sisters: Dream & Variations, Catherine Legault immerses us in an oneiric world made up of animation, performances and cinema vérité. More than a portrait, the film is an inspiring look at the artistic approach, its various forms and how it can simultaneously express and explore who we are.

On March 28th, 2023, legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away after his struggle against cancer. In the years leading up to his death, Sakamoto could no longer perform live. Single concerts, not to mention sprawling global tours, were too taxing. Despite this, in late 2022, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave the world with one final performance: a concert film, featuring just him and his piano. Curated by Sakamoto himself and presented in his chosen order, the twenty pieces performed in the film wordlessly narrate his life through his music. The selection spans his entire career, from his popstar Yellow Magic Orchestra period, to his magnificent Bertolucci film scores, to music from his meditative final album, 12.

Intimately filmed in a space he knew well, surrounded by his most trusted collaborators, Sakamoto bares his soul through his music, knowing this may be the last time that he can present his art. A celebration of an artist's life in the purest sense, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the definitive swan song of the beloved maestro.

New 4K Restoration

Andrei Tarkovsky explained that in Russian the word "nostalghia" conveys "the love for your homeland and the melancholy that arises from being far away." This debilitating form of homesickness is embodied in the film by Andrei (Oleg Yankovsky, The Mirror), a Russian intellectual doing research in Italy. He becomes obsessed with the Botticelli-like beauty of his translator Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano), as well as with the apocalyptic ramblings of a self-destructive wanderer named Domenico (Erland Josephson, The Sacrifice). Written with frequent Michelangelo Antonioni collaborator Tonino Guerra (L'Avventura) and newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative, Nostalghia is a mystical and mysterious collision of East and West, shot with the tactile beauty that only Tarkovsky can provide. As J. Hoberman wrote, "Nostalghia is not so much a movie as a place to inhabit for two hours."

An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean‑Pierre Melville, Le samouraï is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture-with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology.
